Many folks have been clamoring for a web browser for the Pilot. Bitbucket is not a web browser, it is an offline web reader that is automated enough for simple use. This seems to me to be the best approach for HTTP and the Pilot anyway.

Actually, Bitbucket is more than just a offline browser. It is extensable, so its potential is unlimited. It is possible (and easy, I hope) to write extension scripts for Bitbucket that would convert your mail to Doc, or the logs for a server. If USRobotics ever releases a scriptable version of Pilot Desktop, the possibilities will open wide. Use your imagination.

Caveats

I guess I'll start out with the caveats. Bitbucket will almost certainly not hurt the data on your Pilot or your Mac, but you are installing the program at your own risk.

Bitbucket cannot be used without a little configuration. You'll need to hunt down a couple of apps off the net (perhaps you already have them). It might not work on your system. If it doesn't, I'm sorry, but please don't ask me to fix it for you. It is being released as unsupported freeware.

Shopping list

If you don't already have these programs, get ready for a scavenger hunt.

(By the way, if you don't have the programs yet, get them. Even if you don't use Bitbucket, they're indespensible.) There are better descriptions of them on my Mac OS friendly page.

Doc by Rick Bram . Bitbucket converts files to Doc format. You will need Doc to read the converted files.

MakeDocDD by Masatoshi Yoshizawa. Bitbucket uses MakeDocDD to convert files to Doc format.

SImpleInst by Yukinari Suzuki. MakeDocDD uses SimpleInst to intall its Doc PRC files on the Pilot.

A HTML tag stripper program such as TagStripper by Adam Lloyd.

I'm assuming you already have some things: AppleScript, the default OSAXen and the scriptable Finder. Don't worry, all that should have come with OS 7.5(?) or later.

I'm also assuming you have a web browser and a Pilot...

Configuring Bitbucket

Bitbucket walks through the "Scripts" folder, running each script in alphabetical order. Bitbucket in itself does little. The extension scripts in this folder do all the neat stuff.

Open (double-click) the scripts in the "Scripts" folder for more information. Add spaces or other characters to the beginning of the script names to change their running order.

Convert to Doc w/MakeDocDD and Convert form HTML are self configuring. The references to their helper apps are stored as an alias in a property. So you can move the helper files around and Bitbucket can still find them. If the links are broken, as they will be when you first run Bitbucket, they should be smart enough to prompt you for a new helper application and save the new choice in a property.

Fetch URLs w/OpenURL

"Fetch URLs w/OpenURL" opens bookmark ('URL ') or favorite ('LINK') files in the "Fetch" folder inside of the "Bitbucket" folder. If all goes well, it should open the files in the "Daily" folder and the files in the folder named for the current day of the week.

You can add files for Bitbucket to downlosd by dragging icons from your "Bookmarks" window in Netscape (or your "Favorites" window if you use Internet Explorer) to the Finder. Name the file whatever you want the Doc file to be named in your Pilot. Bitbucket does the rest.

This script should work with any browser that supports the "OpenURL to file spec" apple event.

	OpenURL string -- URL
[to 'FSS '] -- file destination
This version has been tested pretty heavily with Netscape 4.0 and Internet Explorer 3.0. Earlier versions of this script have been used with Internet Explorer 2.0 and 2.1 and Netscape 2.0 and 3.0.

Note: Earlier versions of Netscape (<4.0) aren't very happy (read may crash) with having OpenURL events thrown at them this quickly.

To configure "Fetch URLs w/OpenURL" to use a different browser, select "Edit Script" from the "Edit" menu. You can then change the two browser references to your browser. The reference line should look much like this:

tell application "Netscape"

The colors and fonts may differ. Change the application name in quotes to the name of your browser. When you save, Script Editor will have you locate your browser.

Convert from HTML

"Convert from HTML" uses an HTML tag stripper to convert all files in the Tempbucket folder that have a file type of 'TEXT' from HTML to text.

To configure this script, hit "Quit" then drag an HTML tag stripper onto the "Convert from HTML" icon. If you don't have an HTML tag stripper, here are some places to get one:

TagStripper by Adam Lloyd:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ajlloyd/

You can write your own tag stripper SelfReplace application using PowerReplace by Gouniu Han:
http://130.79.4.26/%7Eguoniu/mac/

TagStripper and PowerReplace are shareware. If you use either, please register.

Convert to Doc w/MakeDocDD

"Convert to Doc w/MakeDocDD" converts all files in the Tempbucket folder that don't have a file type of 'PRC ' to Rick Bram's Doc format using MakeDocDD by Masatoshi Yoshizawa.

To configure this script, hit "Quit" then drag MakeDocDD onto the "Convert to Doc w/MakeDocDD" icon.

Be sure to check "Install on next HotSync" so that MakeDocDD will install your Doc files after it converts them. You will also need SImpleInst by Yukinari Suzuki to automatically install the Doc files after they are created. If it is still not available in an english version, there are working translations of the dialog box options on the macos pilot page.

Extending Bitbucket

Bitbucket can be extended using AppleScript.

I may get around to documenting this later. Much later =) But for now, you can probably figure it out by looking at the scripts in the scripts folder.

Basically, write a script and save it as a compiled script, applet or droplet. Drop it into the Scripts folder and Bitbucket will run it in alphabetical order with the other scripts.

You may reuse portions of extension scripts I have written in scripts of your own. All I ask is that you distribute the any useful extension scripts based on this script free of charge. Please contact me for permission if you want to charge for scripts based on my scripts.

I will be happy to post Bitbucket extension scripts here.
